Jack O' Lantern World

Hand-carved polystyrene pumpkins for large displays for annual events in multiple locations in the United States, including Lake Zurich IL, Omaha/Lincoln NE, and Grand Rapids, MI.

Year :

2022, 2023

Industry :

Entertainment

Client :

All Community Events

Project Duration :

12 Weeks

Project Brief:

In the summer of 2022, right after I graduated high school and was about to begin my first year at college, I worked as a pumpkin carver for All Community Event’s “Jack O’ Lantern World” based in Lake Zurich, Illinois. I would hand-carve designs onto individual pumpkins, which would then be lit up and set up across several different venues in the Midwest during the month of October for visitors to view.

Thousands of pumpkins would be set up for the events, creating a yearly tradition for many. I then moved onto installation work with the company, moving on from individual pumpkin images to creating large images across 15-40 pumpkins to produce one coherent visual, such as a mermaid or dolphins.

I was invited back in 2023 and was instantly put in charge of installation work, jumping right into creating projects such as a giant lion and 3 large face playing cards. I would draw out and carve each pumpkin individually before drilling them onto large wooden frames, being able to see the entire visual come together from start to finish.

All Community Events had massively downsized the amount of carvers they needed in the summer of 2023, and I was very grateful to have been brought back for a second year to work on such a unique and passionate project.

Challenges:

The biggest challenge I faced while working on these installations was ensuring that the entire visual was "believable," making sure that all of the pumpkins aligned properly to create the illusion of one solid design. Rarely do I ever need to design on such a large scale, so carving up to 80 different pumpkins meant to create one image was difficult yet enjoyable - seeing the final product come together was beyond satisfying!

Summary:

Working with All Community Events on Jack O' Lantern World was a wonderful experience that I was able to participate in twice. I was able to combine my love for illustration and Halloween, working alongside others just as passionate as I was - it also serves as a great conversation starter whenever I mention my first design job!
